“MONTGOMERY, ALA. (AP) — The Alabama Senate advanced a bill Thursday that would allow Alabamians to donate part of their state income tax refunds to help build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico.

Senators voted 23-6 Thursday to approve the bill by Republican Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh. It would allow residents to check a box on their state income tax form and donate to We Build The Wall Inc., a nonprofit started by a veteran.

“I think it’s a way for Alabamians to say to the President and to the nation that we think strong border security is important. We want to promote that. We want Washington to build that wall,” said Marsh, who is considering a run for U.S. Senate in 2020.

The Senate voted along party lines.

Alabama currently allows people to donate to about 20 groups and programs, such as cancer research and an organ donation awareness program, on their tax forms. The border wall organization would join those groups if the bill wins final passage.

The bill now moves to the Alabama House of Representatives.”

Brian Kolfage, an Air Force veteran who lost both of his legs & right arm in Iraq, thanked the senators who passed the bill in a post on Twitter:

“THANK YOU, #Alabama for approving @SenatorDelMarsh’s bill allowing resients[Sic] to allocate part of their tax refund to #WeBuildTheWall! Urge YOUR Senators to do the same – together we WILL build the wall!”

We Build the Wall, Inc. held two town halls in Cincinnati & Detroit this month. The first town hall was in Tucson, Arizona in February.

We Build the Wall, Inc. board members are on the border negotiating with landowners to build the wall on private property & expect to begin construction sometime in April.
