A horrific tragedy has struck the family of Major League Baseball’s Tamp Bay Raysminor league pitcher Blake Bivens.
Matthew Bernard, the brother-in-law of Bivens, murdered Bivens’ wife, child and mother-in-law and then attacked police officers while he was naked.
Police issued an alert on Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a naked man who was considered to be armed and dangerous.
That man was Bernard, the brother of Bivens’ wife and uncle of the child that he murdered before he attacked the police, WFXR reported.
By 12:18 p.m., Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor said a suspect had been taken into custody though he never mentioned Bernard by name during a press conference.
According to Taylor, he was taken into custody less than a mile from the scene of the crime.
Bernard was naked and unarmed when he was captured after attacking a groundskeeper at Keeley Baptist Church.
“We won’t go into the whys because we don’t know yet,” the sheriff said. “We are trying to figure that out ourselves.”
“First and foremost, the Biscuits thoughts and prayers are with Blake and all those who have been impacted by this tragedy,” Bivens’ team, The Montgomery Biscuits, said in a statement.
“The Chattanooga Lookouts and the Montgomery Biscuits have announced that due to a tragic event within the Biscuits family the Lookouts are cancelling tonight’s games,” their opponents, The Chattanooga Lookouts, said.

“Earlier today we learned that Blake Bivens, a pitcher with our Double-A affiliate, the Montgomery Biscuits, suffered a terrible family tragedy in southern Virginia. Our hearts are broken for Blake,” The Tampa Bay Rays said.
