Charge: African ‘Migrant’ Lyft Driver Raped California Woman

SAN MATEO, CA (KTVU) – A Lyft driver was arrested, accused of taking his 25-year-old passenger back to his home in Tracy and sexually assaulting her, San Bruno police said.
The driver, 46-year-old Tonye Kolokolo, was arrested in San Bruno after the alleged attack took place about 3 a.m. Saturday morning at his home.
The rider had called him for a ride from San Mateo, after acknowledging she was too intoxicated to drive herself, police said. She ended up passing out in the back of the car, police said.
Police said he drove her to Tracy and had non-consensual sex with her there. The woman ended up waking up and calling police.
Neighbors said they were surprised to hear the news.
“I usually stay late and I didn’t notice anything off, notice anything odd,” said Kolokolo’s neighbor, Ramu Kukkurunu, said.
Kolokolo’s neighbors described him as quiet and said he often kept to himself.
“It was shocking, absolutely shocking,” said another neighbor, Brooke Phillips. “Knowing that they live right next door and we would not have suspected anything like that.”

San Bruno Police Lt. Ryan Johansen said at some point the driver made the decision to take her back to his home in Tracy.
Kolokolo was arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail.
“People need to be aware of the fact that if you are impaired beyond the point of being readily able to care for yourself than that could create circumstances you could readily be taken advantage of,” Johansen said. “I think physically the victim is fine but obviously for any trauma victim, there is often a lengthy and involved healing process.”
Lyft issued a statement that read in part, “Safety is fundamental to Lyft. What is being described is terrifying and the driver’s access to Lyft has been permanently removed.”
Police don’t believe there are any more victims, but are putting out Kolokolo’s picture just in case. His bail has been set at $200,000.
Kolokolo was arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of false imprisonment and rape, police said.
