Zulfat Suara made history earlier this month when she became the first muslim and first Nigerian immigrant elected to the Nashville Metro Council.
Suara came to the United States in the 1990’s and settled in Nashville in 1998.
Suara is chair of the American Muslim Advisory Council (AMAC)
Suara has been a speaker at the Nashville Women’s March each year since 2017.
Suara won the general runoff election on September 12, 2019, after advancing from the general election on August 1, 2019.
After winning the election, Suara took to Facebook to announce her win. She wrote:
I am honored to have been elected to serve as an At Large councilmember over the next four years. This election showed that Nashville can work together to achieve the improbable– I’m now honored to be the first Muslim elected official in Nashville and the first Nigerian American woman elected official in America. I had such a diverse group of supporters from across the city who helped propel us to victory. Our county rose above the hate and vitriol of national politics and I am humbled to have been a part of the movement.
Thank you so much for your support and your vote. Today we celebrate, tomorrow we get to work!

Suara is one of many muslims recently elected to the United States Government.
