Muslim Woman Defeats 12 Year Incumbent in Redmond City Council Election

Varisha Khan was recently elected to the Redmond City Council in Washington.
Khan defeated 12 year incumbent Hank Myers by 66 votes. Khan received 6,666 (50.15 percent) while Hank Myers received 6,600 votes (49.65 percent).

Khan, a journalist for The Seattle Globalist, is also the Communications Coordinator at the Washington Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Khan served as a delegate for Bernie Sanders at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. She was also chosen to serve as the Democratic presidential elector for Washington’s 1st Congressional District in 2016. In that role, she casted a vote for Hillary Clinton in the Electoral College.
Khan’s role models include Linda Sarsour and Siraj Wahhaj. She calls Linda Sarsour her hero and says that Siraj Wahhaj is her “fave Imam”.
Khan is an organizer, Lobbyist and Speaker for Americans for Refugees and Immigrants. She has lobbied for increasing the number of Syrian refugees in Washington. Khan organized and spoke at an anti-Islamophobia/anti-Trump rally.
Khan is a former Communication Intern for OneAmerica, where she registered voters on the street and at citizenship oath ceremonies.
Khan was sworn into office on December 17th 2019.
