California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order to halt death penalties in the state.

According to reports, California hasn’t executed anyone since 2006 due to legal challenges to its methods, and the state has put to death only 13 people since 1978. The new executive order is said to last throughout Newsom’s duration in office, giving a reprieve to 737 individuals on death row.

  1. What is the benefit of keeping someone alive in a cage with violent, perverse people for the rest of their life? I've asked people who are against the death penalty about this. They claim it's "more humane" or that it costs less to keep them alive for the rest of their lives than to give them the death penalty.

First of all, anyone who thinks it's "more humane" to keep someone alive in a cage with violent, perverse people obviously doesn't understand what that reality entails. It might be a way for them to feel better about themselves for refusing to agree to someone (even a violent, perverse criminal) being executed. But, I assure you, there is nothing "humane" about prison. Apply for work as a guard or speak to a former prisoner if you don't believe me (an actual prison, not the ones that rich, well-connected people get sent to).

Secondly, what could they possibly be executing them with that costs more than a lifetime of lodging, clothes, bedding, food, beverages, guards, and medical care? Bullets are cheap and a firing squad is an accepted method of execution. If the guards aren't mentally prepared to do it, ask for military officers to volunteer. I don't think there will be any shortage of takers.

With how lax they are on sentencing to begin with, I'd worry that keeping these criminals alive would result in their later release. I don't know if that's legally possible. Then again, I didn't think a "sanctuary city" was legally possible, either.
